Wow And Flutter – Tape Replay
Tape Replay is a Fresh Meat affair. The song was born of a long weekend between close friends Nathan Larsen, Kyle Szmurlo and Mazi Namvar. You should have already heard of Mazi & Nathan but in case you’ve been living under a rock they are DJ’s and producers who’ve done well over 200 releases and remixes on labels like 2020 Vision, NRK, Dessous, Brique Rouge and our sister label Gourmet. Kyle is a new comer to the game and will soon be making noise with future solo projects slated in 2008 on Gourmet. Anyway, it took three days, frequent hydration and some breaks for chemistry to create Tape Replay. To the untrained ear the song is quite nostalgic (and in spirit it is). But in realization, it is an exercise in redefining the boundaries of modern house music. At a time when most producers are getting excessively specialized these three have decided to create a post-house band and write a song that embodies free form song writing and performance. The original mix of Tape Replay is nearly nine minutes long and can only be described as a journey. It’s the perfect transition track, able to turn minimal sets into future disco, a house set into electro-funk, a techno set into a live jam-a-thon or a rigid set of any kind (like too many these days) into something with emotional depth. For remix duties we’ve enlisted our favorite producers Will Saul & Tam Cooper from Simple Records. Much like their tech-house revision of Phonique’s Bang, recently released on Dessous, here on Fresh Meat they have put together a subtle yet bassy response to the Wow & Flutter original. The track builds and builds and at about three fourths through it explodes with lush keys, rich pads and a breakdown that’s executed perfectly. These gents are on point and we are more than excited to have them along for the trip.
