Mark Rapson – Dark vs Light

Fresh after the success of his superb Sarah Vaughan and Marvin Gaye edits, Marc Rapson comes correct with his amazing debut SEVEN track EP entitled “Dark vs Light”. The set opens with the title track which sets the tone for the whole EP; rolling hip hop on an easy instrumental tip, with a soulful jazzy edge to it. Next up we have “Love Is All”, another head-nodding hip hop-soul gem with plenty of 70s jazz-fusion in the keys and a great soul-jazz vocal from Liz Elensky. Side A ends with the slightly more wonky “From Shadows” – delicious. Continuing the wonky theme we have the superb “Click Cloud” which nods its head towards the likes of Dam-Funk and other nu-electro-funk bods. “The Kalimba” is a simple groover with (obviously) a kalimba / finger piano line that just works its way into your head. The soul vocal sample looper “I May Do Things” closes the EP – a perfect early doors bar spin. Beautiful, atmospheric hip hop / soul-jazz grooves combined with lush keys and sublime basslines create an EP of rare quality.
