Kindred Spirit – Future Vintage Vol. 1

R&B-duo Heavy are represented twice with tracks from this year’s ‘Heavy’ EP, including the Rotary Connection-inspired ‘Wonderlove’ – a Gilles Peterson favourite. Brooklyn resident Jneiro Jarel also gets two cuts on the compilation and is one of the hiphop names to watch in the 05. His album ‘Three Piece Puzzle’ may become one of the year’s biggest sets! Also from the USA is Build An Ark who had much critical acclaim with their ‘Peace With Every Step’ LP and their live tour. The beautiful Pharoah Sanders cover ‘You Gotta Have Freedom’ was one of the highlights and is listed here too. Closer to home are abstract beatwizzards Rednose Distrikt (with a little help from Lady Alma!), king of the basement boogie Kid Sublime and accoustic soulbrother Benny Sings.
Chicago’s finest Peven Everett pays tribute to ‘Puerto Rico’, one of his many outputs this year. Add Sun Ra tributes from Kirk Degiorgio and Jimi Tenor, a massive vocal latin tune from Fancisco Mora Catlett plus promising exclusives from Liquid Spirits (a fresh band from the Dutch capitol) and Mikebar and you have a wonderful overview of what Kindred Spirits are all about: putting Amsterdam on the musical map with some of the most soulful music around.
Respect to Kindred Spirits, definately one of the labels of the year.
