Untold – Kingdom/ Purify/ Test Signal

Untold gets his first solo release on Hessle Audio, a Leeds label putting out records that steer well away from the dubstep norm, for instance TRG’s ‘Put You Down,’ a Romanian 2-step track of the highest order. Untold’s debut is likewise innovative, an EP of atmospheric dubstep that keeps its mind firmly on the floor by way of its techno inclinations and rhythmic ability.



‘Kingdom’ leads off with a half-step pattern embellished by ravey woodblocks and jungle atmospherics reminiscent of the finest Horsepower. And not to take anything away from it, but it’s the tracks on the B side that really push forward. ‘Purify’ is 2-step twisted for 2008. African samples make way for the brilliantly wonky drop, which should find favour in all the best clubs. ‘Test Signal’ meanwhile convolutes things further with some of the most intriguing turns heard in a tune in quite some time.
