Johnny Osbourne/ Ansel Collins – Purify You Heart/ Stalag 17
£4.49
First released in Jamaica around the close of 1972, Johnny Osbourne’s hypnotic ‘Purify Your Heart’ has since become regarded as something of a landmark record. It’s overtly Rasta message and menacing rhythm indicated a sea change in the sound and style of Jamaican music that was to result in the ‘Roots’ sounds dominating the latter part of the decade. Ansel Collin’s haunting organ-led instrumental, ‘Stalag 17’, meanwhile proved so powerful that since its original issue in 1973, its rhythm has been used on numerous major hits by artists ranging from Bith Youth to Tenor Saw and Buju Banton.
