The Dave Pike Set – Mathar / Regards From Freddie Horowitz
With unique access to the SABA/MPS tape archive and original artwork, Wallen Bink presents a series of ten limited-edition all-analogue 45rpm 7” singles. Mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios on a Neumann VMS 80 using SABA/MPS mastertapes, via a pure AAA analogue chain.
This series sees the first ever release on 45 single format of some of the most significant and revered recordings within the back catalogue of Europe’s greatest jazz label. Featuring audiophile-grade vinyl and glossy heavyweight covers manufactured at Pallas Group GmbH, this single-press limited-edition series is issued here for the first and only time, with absolutely no represses.
Through the combination of Pike’s vibes and Volker Kriegel’s exploratory electric, acoustic guitar and sitar stylings, The Dave Pike Set was a visionary quartet with a unique identity and textural palette encompassing funk, psychedelia, avant-garde and Indo jazz grooves. Cut directly from analogue master tapes at Abbey Road Studios via an all analogue console, giving a wide dynamic range and warm open sound, the psychedelic sitar and big beat masterpiece ‘Mathar’ has never sounded better. The B-side jazz-dancer ‘Regards From Freddie Horowitz’ was named after the bands mascot, a little green monkey which was dangled in the red Citroën 2CV – Deux Chevaux, the car the four musicians used for travelling to their live concerts
