Injecting some welcome soulful sun-drenched vibes into the dawn of 2009, UK Nu-Jazz pioneers Sunlightsquare reveal their stunning second new album ‘Urban Latin Soul’. With their current single – a fabulous cover version of Stevie Wonder’s 1976 classic, ‘Pastime Paradise’ (featuring the hip voice of Z-Star) championed by Gilles Peterson among others; and their soon to be released delicious latin flavoured outing ‘Amuyada’ (featuring Joy Malcom of Incognito / Moby fame); which both feature on the album, Sunlightsquare are causing one helluva storm across the globe with their beautifully crafted uplifting eclectic grooves. ‘Uban Latin Soul’ is an inspired musical tapestry fusing Latin, nu-jazz, soul, reggaeton, funk and Salsa inspired music to create beautiful innovative productions, be it from magical soulful ballads laced with silky smooth voices, to firey Latin floor shakers, booty shakin reggae vibes or Jazzy party monsters, Sunlightsquare are one of the most exciting bands to spawn from the London Jazz scene in recent times!
Sunlightsquare first started recording together in 2004 and released their debut album ‘Urban Session’ in 2006 on their own label Sunlightsquare Records. Sunlightsquare are a vastly talented London based collective which is the brainchild of Italian pianist Claudio Passavanti, who has culled together a team of heavyweight world class musicians and vocalists including: drum legend Steve Gadd (Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Eric Clapton, James Taylor) bassist Will Lee (George Benson, Donald Fagen, B.B. King, Gloria Estefan) vocalists Joy Malcolm (Moby, Incognito), Z-Star (Slow Train Soul), Tasita D’Mour (Kyoto Jazz Massive, Reel People), Sharlene Hector (Basement Jaxx, Bugz In The Attic), percussionist Giovanni Imparato (Richie Havens, Paco De Lucia, Chico Buarque), drummers Nikolaj Bjerre (Lamb) and Cristiano Micalizzi (Ben Sidran, Stefano Di Battista), and trumpeter Quentin Collins (Basement Jaxx, Craig David, Amy Winehouse). Most of whom perform on forthcoming album ‘Urban Latin Soul’ as well as the live band.
Sunlightsquare will be performing live at London’s Jazz Cafe on February 27th 2009, with a full live band of 10 strong and some special guests joining in the launch of the ‘Urban Latin Soul’ Album.
