The Tomorrow People – Original Television Music
£11.99
Children’s TV show made spooky by soundtrack of pioneering electronic music.
Ron Grainer penned one of TV’s greatest title themes for Dr Who, yet is was Delia Derbyshire’s phantasmagorical electronic orchestrations that truly made the piece iconic.
A stalwart of the BBC’s legendary Radiophonic Workshop, Derbyshire did much to develop electronic music in the 1960s via such albums as An Electric Storm and ESL 104, tracks from which cropped up in several sci-fi shows, among them The Tomorrow People, a teatime classic about a group of superior beings who are constantly called upon to save the universe. Derbyshire’s sounds were perfect for the show, and at last they are available to savour on this long-awaited album.
Dudley Simpson’s mesmerizing title theme, with its other worldly wah-wah motif, establishes the mood perfectly, following which Derbyshire (working under the pseudonym Li De La Russe) provides a number of unsettling aural landscapes peppered with electronic woos, wibs and wubbles. No wonder traumatized kids were hiding behind the sofa.
